Batik

Home in Harmony

Built with inclusiveness in mind, Batik is designed to bring neighbors and residents together, making it a place where people of all income levels, ages and cultures are welcome. This seven-story apartment community in the Yesler neighborhood includes 195 apartments over retail, with 39 units affordable to households earning 65 to 80 percent of Area Median Income.

Batik is named for a method of dying textiles that is prevalent in the Middle East, India, Central Asia, and Africa. Both its name and its architecture reflect patterns and colors inspired by Yesler’s many cultures. From the carefully selected indoor and outdoor artwork that celebrates diversity, to amenities that offer opportunities for residents to interact and learn about each other, Batik offers its residents an immersive cultural experience.

Café Calaveras Finds a Home

Two years ago, founder Clarissa Griego was serving coffee under a tent with borrowed ice chests at a lowrider show in White Center. This summer, she opened her first brick-and-mortar cafe inside Vulcan Real Estate’s Batik apartment building on Yesler. The name honors the sugar skulls of Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday that celebrates ancestry, life, and death. For Griego, that tradition is the framework for her shop.
