Igniting Scientific Discovery
Initially developed for Merck, 401 Terry serves as the headquarters for the Institute for Systems Biology, an internationally renowned non-profit research institute. The 140,000 square foot life science facility houses a variety of research laboratories, administrative offices, and spaces for scientific collaboration. In addition, the building is home to a satellite campus for Northeastern University, a top-tier global research university recognized for its innovative cooperative education program.
Facing Harrison Street at the south end of the building is artist Buster Simpson’s Ping Pong Plaza which provides a place for workers, neighborhood residents, and visitors to relax and play. The fixed bronze ping pong table is located in an “outdoor room,” and the table legs reveal profiles of noted scientists that pay homage to the scientific discoveries occurring in the adjacent building. These paired individuals appear to bounce ideas back and forth, in concert with the action of the ping pong ball above.
