SBRI BUILDING INFORMATION
Building Description
Developed by joint venture partners Vulcan, SBRI (Seattle Biomedical Research Institute), and Harbor Properties, the 112,000 square foot SBRI Building is a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly, five-story biomedical research and office facility with ground-level retail. SBRI's design was conceived with sustainability and environmental awareness in mind.
Home to nearly 200 researchers and other employees, is the largest nonprofit research institute in the U.S. that focuses solely on infectious disease research. The building's second largest tenant, Children's Hospital, conducts research into diseases and immunologic conditions affecting children. For more information on SBRI or Children's Hospital, visit www.sbri.org or www.seattlechildrens.org.
Environmental Design
SBRI was one of the nation's first commercial-sector projects to be evaluated under LEED's Core and Shell pilot program. It earned a silver LEED rating in February 2005, becoming Seattle's first LEED-certified speculative building. LEED, which stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design," is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council for evaluating high performance sustainable buildings.
Sustainable features include:
- A water system designed to cut potable water use by 23% more than the industry standard, saving 186,000 gallons of water each year.
- Native and drought-tolerant landscaping irrigated only by rainwater.
- An HVAC system designed to recover lost heat and cool air, curbing energy use by 30 percent more than the industry standard.
- Large windows for daylight mean fewer electric lights are needed.
- Use of recycled materials and non-toxic finishes.
Public Art
SBRI's art installations can be viewed in front of the building entrance along the sidewalk on Westlake, through the conference room window on Thomas Street, and within the main lobby area. Highly regarded local artist Linda Beaumont (known for her sculpture "The Tempest" that hangs in the rotunda at Safeco Field) designed the architectural glass pieces by combining DNA sequence imagery with images of organisms SBRI scientists currently study.
